Establishment of Research Core on Earthquake Engineering
Keywords
Earthquake Engineering, Earthquake Disaster, Damage Survey, Earthquake Risk, Human Resource Development
Background, Purpose, and Project Achievements
The purpose of this activities is to promote earthquake risk engineering and to establish a research core and network in Myanmar by cooperating with researchers in Yangon Technological University (YTU), Mandalay Technological University (MTU) and University of Yangon (YU). Myanmar has earthquake prone areas such as a subduction zone between the Indian Plate and the Burma Plate in the west, Sagaing Fault with 1,000km length and the Kyakkyan Fault along the north-south backbone of the country. Therefore, an adequate preparedness for disaster should be taken by carrying out the assessment of the earthquake hazard, vulnerability and risk. The collaboration researches subject to above successive assessments induce not only development of fundamental engineering education and human resources but also creation of the new research core on earthquake engineering in ASEAN countries.
Future Prospects
Co-researchers and Ph.D students from YU, MTU and YTU were invited and deepened mutual understanding of current research situations of both countries. Through the discussion, we came up with a collaborative research framework.
Hereafter we try to continue and extend the cooperative research. We are going to submit journal papers and develop a new research filed based on the engineering seeds in Myanmar. Promotion of collaborative research with industry is also one of the key issues.

・Research fields are Earthquake Engineering, Disaster Prevention Engineering and Lifeline Engineering. The researches cover a broad field, from the estimation of strong ground motion near the fault zone, hazard analysis, investigations of the mechanisms of structural damage, to the mitigation of human casualty due to earthquakes and evacuation behavior during an earthquake. Education activities for disaster prevention have being conducted in Indonesia since the 2004 Sumatra earthquake.
