Project Gist

Development of economical soil improvement method for ASEAN highway roads

Keywords

soil improvement, road, embankment, bio, enzyme

Background, Purpose, and Project Achievements

Roads and railways are often supported by “Embankment” which is constructed by compacting soils. In the case that quality of the soil is not good, we need to improve the soil to be sufficiently strong. Since the existing improve methods are sometimes expensive, in particular for developing countries, we need to develop a new technique to improve soils. Kyoto University is now conducting experimental research to develop a new soil improvement method using chemicals discharged from bio-enzyme though a joint research with university of Myanmar.

Future Prospects

Sustainability of the improvement effect produced by bio-enzyme is very important for actual implementation to infrastructures. Improvement effect and its duration will be studied under properly realistic conditions using the soils and water obtained at the site where real construction is expected
