Background, Purpose, and Project Achievements

With the background of ASEAN as rising economic power and the increasingly substantial scholarly exchanges on Southeast Asian studies within the region, in October 2013, CSEAS initiated the creation of SEASIA Consortium, an international network connecting 11 major research institutions from 8 countries to promote Southeast Asian studies within the Asian region. This Consortium functions as a platform for promoting collaboration and exchange in research, education (particularly the training of young scholars), and dissemination of information in the region. In December 2015, the first SEASIA Conference will be held in Kyoto, and will bring together 450 top and up-and-coming researchers from the region to discuss pressing and emergent issues in the region. This SPIRITS program has allowed CSEAS to spearhead the activities of the Consortium leading to the conference, to disseminate information and knowledge throughout the region and beyond, and to lay the foundation for a region-based global academic network. In conjunction with Kyoto University’s ASEAN Center which was launched in Bangkok in June 2014, this Consortium will serve to connect and enhance research cooperation among multi-disciplinary faculty on campus and scholars in the region.

Future Prospects

On December 12-13th, 2015, the first SEASIA Conference will be held in Kyoto (the International House and the Clock-Tower Hall on Kyoto University Main Campus). There will be more than 450 researchers from Asia, Europe, Australia and the U.S. Eminent scholars as well as up-and-coming young researchers will gather to discuss and exchange ideas on multidisciplinary topics. This will be the largest such conference on Southeast Asia ever held. Outcomes will be printed in various academic journals as well as published books. SEASIA conferences will be held every two years in rotation among the participating countries.

Southeast Asia is characterized by the immense diversity of its natural environment, the coexistence of multiple ethnic groups, and religions. In recent years, the region has also come to play a crucial role as a global hub of people and goods. In effect, Southeast Asia is a microcosm of the world. The processes that Southeast Asia has sustained to produce a co-existence of cultures, a flexible peace-keeping mechanism and social development that overcomes economic disparities, offers a new form of wisdom for mankind in the 21st century.
