Background and Purpose

New ethical-legal-social issues concerning medicine are emerging. For example, the integrity of medical research is sometimes questioned as it makes rapid advances, or the provision of care for people with dementia is becoming a more serious problem in the super-ageing society. To tackle these issues, not only medical researchers and practitioners but experts in the field of law, philosophy, ethics and other areas also need to work together. This project aims to build an interdisciplinary research network of specialists in different fields in order to help solving the ethical, legal and social issues surrounding medical research and health care.

Project Achievements

In order to build an international as well as interdisciplinary network of researchers related to the interdisciplinary field of bioethics, we held several symposia and workshops with the support of researchers from Bristol University, Monash University, National University of Singapore. The achievements of our research project are made public through the website for the Center for Applied Philosophy and Ethics or CAPE. The information includes many materials related to bioethics research and education, and an online discussion board (http://www.cape.bun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/project/project02/).

Future Prospects

We will have more symposia and workshops related to ethical issues surrounding medical research and health care, and continue to build a stronger network of international and interdisciplinary researchers interested in the field of bioethics. We will also continue to hold introductory seminars and courses for bioethics, in order to create the right environment for young scholars to obtain excellent education in bioethics and pursue a career in areas related to bioethics.
