Practical Development of Special Nuclear Materials Inspection System for Safe and Secure Society

Project Gist

We will never yield to terror! Advanced science and technology for the fight against terrorism.

Keywords

Nuclear terrorism, special nuclear material, non-destructive inspection, nuclear fusion, neutron generator

Background, Purpose, and Project Achievements

Advanced science and technology to countervail against the threat of nuclear terrorism

It is clear to us that the damage by nuclear terrorism would be immense once it would happen. Magnitude of a risk in general, however, depends not only on the degree of its seriousness, but also on its probability. The reason why the threat of nuclear terrorism is a real threat comes from technological difficulty in blocking smuggling nuclear materials, which is what we have been and being working on through research and development of advanced science and technology.

Future Prospects

Advanced technologies that we have developed aiming at solutions for the global environment and energy issues have also enabled us to develop an innovative method to fight against the nuclear terrorism, of which we plan to move to the next R&D step for practical applications to anti-terrorism activities.
