International research center initiative for physiological chemistry of bioactive molecules pioneering novel health supporting platform

Project Gist

Creation of functional molecules for health maintenance by the intelligence of physiological chemistry, stemmed from integration of chemistry and biology

Keywords

functional foods, pharmaceuticals, physiological chemistry, gut microbiota, fatty acid

Background, Purpose, and Project Achievements

We tried to create novel health supporting molecules by physiological chemistry, stemmed from integration of chemistry and biology. As a research example, we analyzed the function of gut microorganisms for health maintenance. To maintain optimal health, it is important to understand the metabolism of food components by gut microbes and to evaluate the effect of these metabolic products on the hosts. We analyze the physiology underlying the gut-microbial metabolism of dietary lipids, revealed anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory activities of the metabolites, and developed the metabolites as functional food materials.

Future Prospects

We try to create novel health-supporting materials for foods and pharmaceuticals.
