Big Data-based Business Cycle Analysis over Multi-Layered Economic Network

Project Gist

From Economic big data and to Network, toward Evidence based Economy.

Keywords

Network Science, Business Cycles, Time-series Analysis, Synchronization.

Background and Purpose

In recent years, we are blessed with economic big data, which could lead us to science of economics. As the participants of the economic activity are huge, for example, one to two million firms and several hundred financial institutions in Japan only, we need to develop new tools, utilize huge computational resource, and apply statistical(-physics) theories to get to the dynamics at their deepest level. This research project is born on this very background.

Project Achievements

We have developed our own tool box for analyzing the complex network made of economic agents and applied it to world’s equity and currency, individual prices and business cycles and others. Big data in real world contains comovements caused by interactions between economic agents. Our tool set contains CHPCA+RRS which leads to synchronization network, which was valuable for our analysis of several economic phenomena and identify the dynamics hidden in them.

Future Prospects

This is just a starting point for getting to the dynamics at the deepest level of economic phenomena. This project allowed me to expand and establish international collaborative research. We will proceed to further and stronger collaboration.
