Formation of International Platform for Integrated Plant Sciences at Kyoto University

Project Gist

Formation of international platform where various fields of plant sciences are integrated at Kyoto University

Keywords

Plant science, Molecular biology, Macrobiology, International workshop for young researchers

Background and Purpose

This research project started with the international network constructed at the previous symposium “Bristol-Heidelberg-Kyoto” held in 2015. This project aims at forming an international research platform where various fields of plant sciences are integrated. Using this international platform of “plant sciences”, we also aim to train PM type research leaders and to create innovations by exchange of different abilities and ideas. Our project will accelerate the internationalization of Kyoto University and promote the creation of innovative practices.

Project Achievements

Two international workshops organized by young scientists were held at University of Bristol (UK) in 2017 and at University of Zurich (Swiss) in 2018. In each workshop, approximately 60 participants (14 from Kyoto University) exchanged active discussions. Many students and postdocs had opportunities to present their researches in these workshops. In the collaboration with University of Bristol, we accepted graduate students each other for a short period, which improved research technologies at both sides. We published some of the results as a collaborative research paper in FY2018.

Future Prospects

In order to foster internationally active researchers, it is important for students and postdocs to have opportunities to present their researches abroad and to interact with the same generation. We would like to further develop the network formed in this research project and to hold periodic international workshops.
