Formation of an International Research Network for Creating the Post-Capitalist Society by Utilizing Islamic Economic Knowledge

Project Gist

Envisioning a new economic and social paradigm from Islam

Keywords

Islamic economy, Universalization of Islamic Economic Knowledge, Post-capitalism

Background and Purpose

This research project focuses on the new economic and social practice of “Islamic economy,” which has been rapidly developing in the Islamic world in recent years, and explores how the unique mechanisms and social development models developed there (collectively called “Islamic economic knowledge”) can be applied and utilized to create a better future for the entire global society as a new economic and social paradigm for the post-capitalist era through joint research by six research clusters in Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Middle East, the United Kingdom, and France.

Project Achievements

There are two main outcomes of this project: one is to launch the Kyoto Series of Islamic Economic Studies, which is the publication of research results in multiple languages. In March 2021, five books (in English, Turkish, Indonesian, Malay, French) were published simultaneously. In addition, as an effort to disseminate the research results to Japanese society, two introductory books in a hybrid format of paper and electronic media were published in December 2020 (a total of six publications in six languages). The second is to launch the Kyoto University Islamic Economic Studies Project (KUISES) as a new international research platform based on this project, with Kyoto University as the hub, in collaboration with each cluster.

Future Prospects

In order to expand the Kyoto University Islamic Economic Studies Project (KUISES), which was established under this project, we will deepen our international joint research. In addition, we will collaborate with researchers from other regions and disciplines to examine the uniqueness and universality of the Islamic economy from a comparative perspective, and to jointly propose a new economic and social paradigm for post-capitalism.
