ワークショップ概要

“Mindfulness,” an English term originally translating the Buddhist concept of sati in Pāli (Chinese 念), has become a major umbrella-term in order to integrate meditation techniques in modern psychology and medicine. In this symposium, we will re-envision the signifiance of so-called mindfulness-based interventions for higher education, by combining Eastern and Western perspectives, and bridging classical humanities with cognitive sciences. We will thus explore how mindfulness, or more precisely “mindful awareness” (sati-sampajañña 正念正知), can be considered as the pillar for educating the whole person.
The symposium will have two parts. In the first part, we will host a guest lecture by Prof. Willem Kuyken, Director of Oxford Mindfulness Centre, on the topic of the intervention that he has been researching and developping, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Life (MBCT-L, or in short: “Mindfulness for Life”), and its specific application to higher education.
In the second part, we will host a group of three presentations exploring (1) the cross-cultural dimensions of mindfulness in higher education from the point of view of anthropology of education, (2) the ancient sources of mindfulness from the point of view of Buddhist studies and comparative philosophy, and (3) the psychological/medical framework for bringing mindfulness into higher education in contemporary Japan.
We will conclude with a general discussion in order to integrate these different perspectives, Eastern and Western, and envision a culturally sensitive model for mindfulness in higher education, with special consideration for Japan.
