Creation of new tactilogy and its applications

Designing Tactile Sense

Background and Purpose

The sense of touch is the most primitive means of communication. The research group has developed a language for describing and designing tactile changes in the sense of touch with reference to facial massage. In this SPRITS project, we will develop a device that reproduces designed tactile stimuli. In addition, we will examine the possibility of using this musical notation and device for music and dance, as well as for Self-reliance support of the blind and deaf, and as a means of expression. In parallel, we will examine the effects of tactile stimulation in the broad sense of the word on the development of infants and the rehabilitation of the elderly.

Project Achievements

In this SPRITS project, we have developed a face mask that reproduces the designed tactile stimuli. For artistic use, we performed an experimental performance in which we created tactile stimuli from dances in real time and transmitted them to the audience through a face mask. We are also trying to teach haptic notation techniques to the deaf so that they can create massages and other tactile content. It is hoped that this will help the blind and deaf to become more independent. In parallel, we conducted a preparatory study of the effects of tactile stimulation in the broad sense of the word on the development of infants.

Future Prospects

First of all, I would like to try to quantitatively demonstrate the physiological effects of face masks on tactile stimulation in the form of evidence. In fact, the parallel analysis of infant heart rate data is derived from the use of heart rate data as a physiological indicator. In addition, we will study the effects of mother-child interactions, such as physical contact, on infants’ cognitive abilities and language development.
